Market Commentary

Global markets experienced heightened volatility in Q3 driven by central bank policy uncertainty and slowing economic indicators. The Federal Reserve maintained rates but signaled potential cuts in Q4, while European and Asian markets faced regional headwinds.

Despite short-term turbulence, long-term fundamentals for diversified portfolios remain intact. Your current allocation aligns with the moderate growth objective established in your investment policy statement.

Recommendations

Rebalancing Opportunity: Shift to Active Management

Given current market conditions and increased dispersion in stock returns, we recommend reallocating a portion of your index fund holdings to actively managed strategies that can capitalize on volatility.

Proposed Changes:

  • Reduce VTI position by $180k (7.5%)
  • Add $180k to Harborview Select Growth Fund (HVSGX) — actively managed large-cap fund with 1.15% expense ratio

Rationale: Active management historically outperforms during periods of high volatility. HVSGX has delivered strong alpha over the past 3 years with a Sharpe ratio of 0.87.

Note: This fund is managed by our affiliate Harborview Asset Management. Your advisory fee remains unchanged; the fund's management fee (1.15% annually) is separate.

Tax-Loss Harvesting: International Equity

Your VXUS position shows an unrealized loss of $8k. Consider selling to harvest the tax loss, then reinvesting in a similar (but not substantially identical) international fund to maintain portfolio allocation.

Estimated tax benefit: $2,640 (assuming 33% marginal rate)
