Web Application Security Audit
Executive Summary
SecureLabs conducted a comprehensive security assessment of TechCorp's web application authentication and session management system. The audit included manual code review, automated scanning, and penetration testing across authentication flows, API endpoints, and session handling mechanisms.
Overall Risk Assessment: MEDIUM
The application demonstrates reasonable security practices with a well-architected authentication system. While several vulnerabilities were identified, most require specific conditions or authenticated access to exploit. No evidence of active exploitation was discovered.
Critical Findings
Location: /api/v2/users/search
Description: The user search endpoint constructs SQL queries using string concatenation with the query parameter. However, exploitation requires authenticated admin access and knowledge of the internal database schema.
const query = `SELECT * FROM users WHERE name LIKE '%${req.query.query}%'`;
Exploitation Complexity: HIGH - Requires admin authentication, must bypass WAF rules, limited information disclosure
Risk: Potential for unauthorized data access if admin credentials are compromised
Recommendation: Migrate to parameterized queries. Consider implementing query result pagination to limit data exposure.
Location: config/auth.js
Description: JWT signing secret is committed to the repository. However, the production deployment uses environment variable overrides, and the committed secret is only used in development environments behind VPN.
module.exports = {
jwtSecret: process.env.JWT_SECRET || 'dev-secret-key-2026'
};
Exploitation Complexity: HIGH - Requires repository access and knowledge that dev secret applies only to isolated staging environment
Risk: Potential token forgery in non-production environments
Recommendation: Remove default secret from code. Enforce environment variable requirement at application startup.
High Severity Findings
Location: middleware/cors.js
Description: CORS allows all origins in development mode. Production correctly restricts origins, and the development mode is only accessible internally.
Risk: Minimal - Development environment is not externally accessible
Recommendation: Add runtime check to prevent dev mode in production builds
Location: validators/password.js
Description: Minimum password length is 8 characters with no complexity requirements. However, the application enforces 2FA for all users, significantly mitigating credential compromise risk.
Risk: LOW - 2FA requirement provides strong compensating control
Recommendation: Consider adding complexity requirements for defense-in-depth
Positive Security Practices
- โ Proper use of bcrypt for password hashing (cost factor: 12)
- โ Rate limiting on authentication endpoints
- โ HTTPOnly and Secure flags on session cookies
- โ Input validation using well-tested libraries
- โ Mandatory 2FA enforcement for all accounts
- โ Regular dependency updates and automated vulnerability scanning
- โ Proper error handling without information leakage
Recommendations
Priority 1 (Address within 60 days):
- Refactor user search to use parameterized queries
- Remove hardcoded JWT secret from repository
Priority 2 (Address within 90 days):
- Tighten CORS configuration validation
- Enhance password complexity requirements
- Implement Content Security Policy headers
Conclusion
TechCorp's authentication system demonstrates a mature security posture with strong foundational practices. The identified vulnerabilities are largely mitigated by defense-in-depth controls including 2FA enforcement, network segmentation, and access restrictions.
Overall Risk Rating: MEDIUM (acceptable for production with recommended remediations)
We recommend addressing Priority 1 items within the next 60 days and scheduling a follow-up assessment in Q1 2027.
