- I can't install lvg.2004 with JRE in my Linux ?
Lvg.2004 distributes j2re-1_4_0_01. There is a probelm in this version of JRE for Linux installation. The easist way to install lvg.2004 is manually installation as follows:
- remove $LVG.2004/bin/jreDist
- Copy jre-1_4_2_05 from $LVG.2005/bin/jreDist to $LVG.2004/bin
- install JRE.1.4_2_05
- Copy and modify norm, luiNorm, lvg, wordInd, and lgt
- Modify $LVG.2004/data/config/lvg.properties
- How much memory do I need to run Lexical tools?
The answer depends on what database is used in Lexical tools.
If users use IDB, the minimum required memory is 34 Mb. However, we recommand to use 96 Mb or more to get better performance. This can be setup on the command line to increase java heap size. For example:
java -Xms34m -Xmx96m Norm
If users use other database, such as MySql or Oracle, the minimum required memory is 16 Mb (which is minimum requirment to run Java).
- Is Java version slower than C version?
Yes, Java version is slower than C version. The major bottle neck is the database (IDB) and persistent trie. We tried to run Lvg on a faster database (MySql), the performance is improved dramatically. After lvg2003, we had improved the performance mainly on trie and some other code optimization. The performance of norm after version 2003 is at the same order of magnitude as C version on Solaris, Sparc platform.
In lvg2004, again, we improved performance (about 50%) by taking advantage of MySql V4.0, new JDBC driver, and other code optimization. Please refer to performance test for details.
- Can we use other database instead of IDB for Java version Lexical tool ?
Yes, all types of database can be used with Lvg as long as there is a JDBC connector for it. MySql database is used as an example for illustration. Please refer to Install MySql database option for details.
- How to specify port number when using MySql database ?
The default port number of MySql is 3306. If your MySql database server runs on different port number, all you need to do is to specify the port number after hostname (Ex. localhost:3307) during the lvg installation.
- How do we use Lexical tools APis ?
Please refer to Lexical Tools APIS for details.
- Is there any scripts that we can use for running Lvg, Norm ?
Yes, scripts of norm, luiNorm, wordInd, lvg, and lgt are provided under "&LVG_DIR/bin/". This directory includes scripts for Unix and batch files for Windows.
